Xoa
Bóp (pronounced 'Shoah Bop') has
been practised for at least a thousand
years in the area of the Red River basin,
the cradle of Vietnamese civilization. It is
mentioned in the memorials of Confucian
scholars at Hanoi who, in 1076, founded
the Temple of Literature, the nation's first
seat of learning.
Xoa Bóp technique has spread throughout
south-east Asia and such is its popularity
that Xoa Bóp is now one of the emblems
of an energetic, thriving Vietnam. Helping
to reconcile the old with the new, its
ancient healing powers ease the stress of
modern life. If you have visited my country
you may have seen the strange symbol of
a huge foot projecting above the
pavement!
For fragrance, I use a mild solution
of Dau Oai Huong (Lavender) or
leaves of Cáy Có hu'o'ng Ví Chanh
(Lemon Balm) to which I add a
compound of Thuoc Bac (over twelve
types of powdered bark and leaf)
according to symptoms and
preferences.
Manipulation
is applied to each joint in turn. The pressure is quite gentle but you
are likely to experience some sensations because the foot is connected
to at least thirty-six different areas of the body. The skin is
anointed with an agreeable aromatic compound that is readily absorbed,
containing Dau Bac Ha (Peppermint) and Dinh Huong (Clove). This tones
the skin and makes you feel more alive and buoyant.
Xoa Bóp can have
the very positive effect of directing us to a clearer appreciation of
our own bodily needs and functions, but it is just as important for us
to find time to relax and attain a sense of physical well-being and
inner peace
