Vale of Rheidol Railway
"An unforgettable journey
through the spectacular Rheidol Valley by narrow gauge steam train."
The Vale of Rheidol Railway is one of the Great Little Trains of Wales
and was the last steam railway owned by British Rail until it was
privatised in 1989. Trains depart from the centre of Aberystwyth. The
11¾ mile journey between Aberystwyth and Devil's Bridge takes
approximately one hour in each direction as the train overcomes a
height difference of over 600ft, affording superb views of the Rheidol
Valley.
Devils Bridge
Legend says that the bridge was built by the Devil as it was
too difficult for mortal people to build. The Devil built the bridge in
return for the soul of the first life to cross the bridge, but the
Devil was tricked by an old woman who threw bread onto the bridge and
her dog followed, thus becoming the first life to cross the new bridge.
At Devil's Bridge there is a cafe, toilets and a picnic area. The
famous Mynach Falls, Jacob's Ladder and the Devil's Punchbowl are
within easy walking distance of the trainstation.
